Epidemiological studies first published in the late 1970s noted relatively low cardiovascular mortality in populations such as Eskimos with high fish consumption. The apparent health benefits of fish are explained, at least in part, by the EPA and DHA they contain. Since these early studies, hundreds of observational and clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the effects of EPA and DHA from marine sources.
